Using inventive packaging, an infusion set is easier to assemble. It minimizes contamination of the infusion device, and provides a reliable means of insertion. It also guarantees stability of the needle hub. It can be used for intermittent and continuous administration of therapeutic substance.
An infusion set is composed of an infusion part, a connector, and a removable part. The infusion part can be one piece, or it can be made up of two pieces. It has a cannula that penetrates the skin of a patient. It can be made of soft, heat-seal coated Tyvek(r) or paper material. It can be formed with a circular groove or can be retracted. It is connected to the connector by adhesion.
A removable part is located on the distal side of the infusion set, and is removed by the user. This part is mainly made of paper, or can be made of Integra peel medical grade paper. It can be fastened to the upper edge of the impenetrable part.
An insertion needle is delivered with the infusion set under sterile conditions. When the user inserts the infusion set, the insertion needle penetrates the skin of the patient and forces the infusion part from the packaging. The insertion needle is then pulled out from the infusion set. It can be made of polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, or other relatively hard plastic.
A connector is located between the infusion part and the insertion needle. It connects the infusion part to the medical device. The connector may extend from the distal side of the infusion part, or it may be attached to the proximal side of the infusion part.
